We disagree with the cessationist doctrine expressed by the author in this book, because we believe that the gifts of the Spirit (speaking in foreign languages that are intelligible, understandable, and translatable; the gift of prophecy; the gift of performing miracles; the gift of healing ; the power to cast out demons or exorcism ) are still bestowed by Christ upon His Church through the Holy Spirit: Mark 16:17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; 18 they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.We certainly agree with the author who confesses a sound doctrine concerning the Holy Spirit received at the new birth once and for all, at the very moment when, believing in the Good News of Jesus Christ who died for our sins on the cross and rose from the dead, we put all our trust in Him, the only source of salvation. No one therefore needs a second outpouring of the Spirit or to speak in obscure tongues that cannot be understood or translated. It is important to distinguish between xenoglossy (the ability to speak in foreign languages that can be translated and understood) and glossolalia, as practiced in charismatic and Pentecostal circles, which is a stream of incomprehensible and untranslatable words that, far from edifying the believer, can be a trap and an opportunity for demonic possession. *
