Frederick Fyvie Bruce FBA (1910-1990), généralement cité sous le nom de F. F. Bruce, est un bibliste écossais qui soutient la fiabilité historique du Nouveau Testament. Son premier livre, New Testament Documents : Are They Reliable ? - Titre anglais de l’ouvrage que nous présentions - (1943), a été élu par le périodique évangélique américain Christianity Today en 2006 comme l'un des 50 meilleurs livres "qui ont façonné les évangéliques"

PREFACE A L’EDITION FRANÇAISE : Ce livre a tout d’abord été publié en anglais en 1943. A cette époque, j’enseignais l’histoire et la littérature de la Grèce antique et j’avais pris l’habitude de replacer le Nouveau Testament dans son contexte historique.

On m’a souvent demandé de faire des conférences dans des lycées et des facultés sur la crédibilité des textes du Nouveau Testament et des évangiles en particulier. Quelles raisons peuvent nous pousser à faire confiance à ces textes ? Elles sont nombreuses lorsqu’on les compare à celles que les autorités en lettres classiques ont définies pour établir l’authenticité et la crédibilité des autres textes. C’est ce que je m’efforçais de montrer. Et ce livre est né de ces conférences.

On a fait la remarque, et à juste titre, que si l’on s’intéresse au Nouveau Testament, la question de sa validité historique n’est pas tout. En effet, la doctrine chrétienne affirme que l’histoire rapportée par le Nouveau Testament est le sommet de la révélation de Dieu à l’homme et que Jésus-Christ, qui en est le centre d’intérêt, est l’incarnation de la vérité éternelle. Mais ce livre ne peut le prouver. Pour ceci, une démonstration d’un autre genre est nécessaire.

Pourtant je me suis rendu compte que la plupart des étudiants sont davantage prêts à considérer cette doctrine si le Nouveau Testament est une œuvre historiquement authentique que si ce n’est pas le cas. Et je pense qu’ils ont raison. Dans l’évangile, l’histoire et la théologie sont inséparablement liées car toute sa puissance dépend des faits historiques qui ont eu lieu au Proche-Orient au premier siècle de notre ère. Je profite de cette occassion pour remercier mes amis qui ont édité ce livre en français et pour exprimer à tous les lecteurs mes meilleurs sentiments.

PREFACE TO THE FRENCH EDITION: This book was first published in English in 1943. At that time, I was teaching the history and literature of ancient Greece and I had gotten into the habit of placing the New Testament in its historical context.

I have often been asked to give lectures in high schools and colleges on the credibility of the New Testament texts and the Gospels in particular. What reasons can lead us to trust these texts? They are numerous when compared to those that the authorities in classical literature have defined to establish the authenticity and credibility of other texts. This is what I was trying to show. And this book was born from these conferences.

It has been pointed out, and rightly so, that if we are interested in the New Testament, the question of its historical validity is not everything. Indeed, Christian doctrine affirms that the story recorded in the New Testament is the summit of God's revelation to man and that Jesus Christ, who is the center of interest, is the incarnation of the truth. eternal. But this book cannot prove it. For this, a demonstration of another kind is necessary.

Yet I have found that most students are more willing to consider this doctrine if the New Testament is a historically authentic work than if it is not. And I think they're right. In the gospel, history and theology are inseparably linked because all its power depends on the historical facts that took place in the Middle East in the first century AD. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my friends who published this book in French and to express my best feelings to all readers.
